about

Kai Kln 1995-12-31 at The Crest Theater, Sacramento CA
In 1995, Kai Kln, with the help of soundman Eric Bianchi (read: Eric did all the work), recorded a few shows on ADAT 8-track tape. This recording is the last of the multi-track recordings, made in front of a sold out Crest Theater crowd, with supporting acts Little Guilt Shrine, Orisha, Carve, and Jonah Matranga from FAR (sadly not included in the recordings)

A multi-track soundboard recording of the band was rare, and luckily, they were saved and we were able to transfer the tapes to digital. The sound is great! This captures the band at a high point, even with the occasional flaw found in live recordings. We missed a half a minute or so of the first song, Blur, but I’ve included what was on the tape. What follows is a mix of new (at the time) songs that would appear on “The Matter Of Things” about a year later and classic Kln with some special songs thrown in. Some highlights – Unreleased instrumental “Birds and Birds and Bees”, the rarely played live “Obscene Jester”, a couple Gene Smith original solo songs “The Specialist” and “Aeroplane”, one of our more ambitious skits in which we projected Boz-el up on the screen of the Crest Theater so he could convince Bozon to save the earth from the evil Brown Eye and the subsequent battle, a Beatles cover that was rarely played, an extended Kong leading into Nineteen, and another unreleased instrumental “Mission Ignition #18”. And if that wasn’t enough there’s some pretty good live versions of our classics throughout the night. It was a pleasure to mix these songs down for this recording (although they were pretty solidly mixed while they were being recorded by soundman Eric Bianchi, I didn’t have to do much), and I hope you all enjoy the listen as much as I did.

A video exists of this show as well, look for it on YouTube
